Why North American Institute of Orthopaedic Manual Therapy? Why NASHVILLE? Why NOW?

Why pursue training and mentorship with The North American Institute of Orthopaedic Manual Therapy (NAIOMT)? Here are three reasons:

1. Clinical Reasoning

NAIOMT is known for its clinical reasoning. Manual therapy has come to be known to some only as a term used for a group of techniques/ mobilizations/ manipulations. This should not be true. It should include clinical reasoning at its foundation. THE MOST important aspect of treatment is the context for WHEN to use WHAT technique. Otherwise, we are just a technician using cookie-cutter techniques. Do you know what pathology and what structure is the source of the problem? Do you know the regional influences on that structure? Do you know what activities to tell your patient to do or not to do?

2. Eclecticism

NAIOMT has had to be eclectic because it has always had more than one person at the top of the teaching organization. This is good, because again, it becomes more important to be able to reason through your theory and techniques so that you can support why you are doing what you are doing. In NAIOMT, you are not going to learn one person’s pet techniques. You are not going to memorize what someone else thinks. You are going to learn how to learn and how to think.

3. Life-long connection to life-long learners

NAIOMT draws therapists that want to know as much as they can. They want basic science and they want real clinical skills. They pursue this because they are passionate about OMPT and it shows. So, you end up with a fully-engaged group of OMPTs that share an avid area of interest and love to share this with each other.
